Improving Brain Function

All services are performed by Michael Brown, LCSW, MSW, MA:

My goal is to provide affordable, sensitive, innovative, and natural therapy services to help people resolve trauma, maximize performance, and strengthen physical and mental health.

I provide individual therapy for adults, adolescents, and children.

I specialize in treating adults with histories of trauma, including PTSD and developmental/complex trauma. I rely largely on a combination of ILF HD neurofeedback, Memory Reconsolidation, and EMDR to work on these issues. I use a form of the Component Based Psychotherapy model, which I have found to be highly successful.

My work with children involves the use of neurofeedback to address: ADHD, autism, oppositional behaviors, emotional control issues, learning disabilities, sensory problems, and more.

I also work with people who are doing just fine but want to improve their performance in some way, for example, with sports, academics, creative writing, business, visual arts, and music. Concentration, focus, relaxation, and emotional control are key to achieving optimal performance in all fields. Athletes, students, and business executives have been taking advantage of neurofeedback technologies to learn how to utilize the full potential of their minds to achieve a state of “flow” which is so important in achieving their peak levels of performance.

I use neurofeedback to address problems of brain dysregulation. By helping the brain learn to better regulate itself, neurofeedback can also be useful in reducing the symptoms associated with some organic brain conditions such as seizures, mild TBI, stroke, the autism spectrum, and cerebral palsy. It is important to understand that when it comes to problems of dysregulation, there is not a disease to be cured. Where disregulation is the problem, helping the brain to teach itself how to self-regulate is very often the most effective remedy. But again the word “cure” would not apply.

As they are related to issues of regulation and/or trauma, my methods allow me to address the following:

  • PTSD
  • Complex PTSD
  • Developmental trauma
  • Stress
  • ADHD
  • Chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Side effects of chemo therapy
  • Sleep issues
  • TBI/CTE
  • Effects of stroke
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Eating disorders
  • Depression
  • Dissociation
  • Memory
  • Effects of aging (Alzheimer’s and dementia)
  • High blood pressure
  • Sugar craving
  • Migraines
  • Seizures
  • Asthma (trauma related)
  • Effects of FASD
  • Addictions
  • Anger
  • Aggression
  • Autism
  • Learning disabilities

I strongly urge all my clients to get checked out by a medical professional to rule out causes due to organic problems. I do not treat or attempt to cure bona fide medical issues. If you are currently taking medications, please consult with your prescriber before making changes. It is frequently the case that as the effects of therapy take hold, medications can be reduced or even eliminated. Again, you would want to consult with your prescriber before making changes. They are usually very supportive of cutting back on medications as progress is made.

***Note: Most people respond positively to the therapeutic means I employ. The treatment goal is to maximize whatever potential for success you possess by helping the brain better self-regulate. However, people can vary in their response to the treatment.
